Business Networking - Choosing The Best Local Chapter

April 14th, 2008 Posted in Automotive, Business

Most people can choose from a number of different structured networking groups. There are independent groups, chamber-sponsored groups, small groups, large groups, single chapter organizations and multi-chapter organizations. Some of the groups are free and others charge money. How can you decide which is the structured networking group that would be best for you?

There are four criteria of the local chapter that an individual should consider when looking for a structured business referral organization.

1. Convenience is necessary in order to sustain your interest and participation in a group. You should choose a networking group that meets at a convenient time and is conveniently located to your work or home so that you can easily attend meetings and generate referrals for others and they for you.

2. Compatible members will exhibit characteristics of good potential referral partners and will be people to whom you would feel comfortable sending referrals. Quality and stability are more important than quantity. You should look for a networking group whose members reflect the ethical standards to which you have committed and are capable of generating referrals for you.

3. Commitment of the members to helping each other is the primary determinant of the degree of success the group will have. Member success and satisfaction with the group and the parent organization are reflected in low turnover and greater chapter stability.

4. Quality meetings should be timely, structured and businesslike. One way to evaluate the professionalism of an organization is to observe what occurs at a typical meeting. Are guests welcomed and asked about their businesses? Is an agenda being followed? Are those in official roles prepared for their part and following their script/guideline at the meeting? Are there an adequate number of referrals shared?

Remember, your purpose in joining a structured networking organization is to receive assistance in the development of effective referral partner relationships and thus referrals. You should seek the organization that will be most effective in helping you achieve that goal.
