Auto Insurance - Are You Paying Terrible Rates Because Of Your Age?

March 18th, 2008 Posted in Business

There are age groups that are favorable in auto insurance. In the same vein, some are not. The importance of knowing the perception insurance companies have of your age group cannot be overemphasized. However, it’s also important to note that you may miss savings available to your age group due to ignorance. Just take note that there are ways you can make considerable savings because of, or despite, your age bracket.

If you belong to a low risk age group, you’re at an advantage. But for those who are above fifty years, there are even more concessions since you are regarded as a very low risk age group in car insurance. The only thing that can annul such concessions is if your driving records prove otherwise. Is there anything those who find themselves in high risk age brackets can do? First, I’ll make a rather funny suggestion: Get married if you are old enough but still belong to a high risk age group.

The most reckless age group in driving is the under-25 age group. That’s an accepted fact. The lower the age group the higher the likelihood of recklessness in driving. For example, a teenager is considered more likely to be reckless than a twenty four year old. Along these lines, male teenagers are usually more given to wildness on the road than the girls. Compared with the girls, boys within this age bracket will cost more to insure. These are very obvious facts which shape what insurance companies charge as Auto insurance premium. Marriage reduces the high risk associated with the under-25 age group due to its sobering effect.

Anyone who remains reckless after getting married is likely to remain reckless for life. Everyone becomes more considerate once they get married, and more so, when they have a child to care for. This affects every part of your life including driving — You drive more carefully. This is why getting married lowers your car insurance premium.

Like I said earlier, older persons who are far above 25 are considered a lower risk all things being equal. This means that being on your parents’ car insurance policy will reduce what you pay dramatically. To use this option your car has to be registered in your parents’ name. Has that removed the attractiveness? It may further lose its attraction because young persons have to live with their parents to take advantage of this. If you prefer independence, you’ll have to bear the cost, though.

Many factors determine your auto insurance premium. I’ve just talked about age grouping and how it affects your car insurance premium. But it must be said that the weighting it gets will differ from insurance company to company. There will, therefore, be a disparity in the quotes you get from different insurance companies. The difference could be as much as $1000 or sometimes more. Because of this, anyone who has any plans of making reasonable savings has to get and compare as many quotes as make sense.
