Reading Tarot Cards - Beyond The Cards
I’ve been doing Tarot readings for over 25 years now. Lots of people ask me in passing, after performing a reading for them, “How does one learn to do that?” It’s a funny question for me, because unlike everything else that I have learned in my life, Tarot Card reading was something that, for me anyway, came more from my gut than from a book or any teacher. This article is not going to discuss the mechanics of reading Tarot Cards. That will be saved for another article. What we’re going to do here is go into an area that I like to call “Beyond The Cards.” Hopefully, after reading this, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what I’m talking about when I say to go beyond the cards.
If you’ve ever looked at a book on reading Tarot Cards, you pretty much have the basics down as far as reading cards on what I call a “technical” level. But a true psychic only uses the book as a guide, and at times a very loose guide. See, the problem with books is that everything is written in black and white. Unfortunately, our lives are not black and white and each situation requires a different interpretation of the cards. The trap that most beginning readers make is to try to fit the cards to the situation, or should I say, the perceived situation. The situation is not flexible. It will be what it will be. You can give guidance and try to warn your subject about a certain course of action bringing about possible harm, but the situation is what it is. To that end, you need to make the situation fit the card. Each card then interprets differently based on the situation.
To give you a clearer picture of what I am talking about, let me give you a piece of a sample reading that I did. In this reading, the subject asked me if he boyfriend was going to ask her to marry him in the coming year. In laying out the cards, I saw that the majority of the cards supported an early marriage and yet, the final outcome showed no marriage. To be honest, I was quite puzzled by the whole thing, until I realized that this wasn’t a black and white situation. There was another option and sure enough, it was the one I saw when I told her that her boyfriend was not going to ask her to marry him, but instead was going to ask her to live with him. She insisted that he’d never do that because he knows how she feels about that. Still, I insisted that he was going to ask her to live with him. I’d been wrong before, but I was pretty sure about this one. Sure enough, he DID ask her to live with him.
If I had interpreted the cards literally, I would have done one of two things. Either I would have looked at the majority of the cards pointing towards a marriage proposal and said, yes, he was going to ask her to marry him, or, I would have looked just at the final outcome card, that showed a definite no and told her that he would not ask her to marry him, leaving out the possibility of the alternative question, “Will you live with me.”
This is an intuition that you will build over time. It is what I call going beyond the cards.
Try it sometime. You may be surprised by the results.
