Well there is usually a simple reason for a dogs aggression, they’re not all barking mad. Below are some of the reasons why your dog has just turned from a loving bundle of fun, to a crazed feral beast overnight.
Reason #1 - Dominance Aggression - Do You Wanna Be In My Gang?
One of the reasons for aggressive behavior in your dog, is to establish dominance. This type of behavior can be shown toward humans too, but it is more often or not, it is shown against other dogs. Dogs are pack animals, and in the wild there is a hierarchy within that pack. Domesticated dogs think of the people in their family as their pack, and it is natural for them to try and establish themselves as the alpha dog, so aggressive behavior may occur when there are a lot of people or other pets around.
Reason #2 - Territorial Aggression - Hey You Get Off My Patch!
Dogs consider their home and family as a possession, and it’s only natural that they will protect them. Aggressive behavior will inevitably occur, when a dog feels threatened when someone invades it’s private space. While it may be one of the admirable in the mind of your dog, it is still unacceptable in the world of human beings.
Reason #3 - Fear Aggression
There are some specific signals that a dog is afraid, and those signs need to be taken seriously, because fear is one of the most misunderstood reasons for aggression in dogs. A dog in a state of fear will usually strike out because it feels threatened. The signs to look out for are, growling, ears pulled back, and the tail between the legs.
Reason #4 - Redirected Aggression
This behavior occurs when a dog cannot take out its aggression on the actual object causing the fear, anger, or territorial thoughts. For instance, if your dogs are in the backyard and a person they perceive as an intruder enters the house, the dogs may turn on one another. However, this type of aggression is hard to understand, simply because they do not know what started the aggressive behavior.
Reason #5 - Medical Problems
Finally, there may be a legitimate medical reason for the sudden aggressive behavior in your dog. Also, some females show signs of aggression when they are pregnant or nursing, and though maternal protectiveness is common in many nursing females aggression can be curbed through good training early on in the dog’s life.
