The Experience Of A Boating Safety Novice

April 18th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Recreation and Sports

Ahh yes, boating, I remember the day when I first got on board a boat, in the hands of a novice boating person. I knew nothing and he knew almost nothing. What a recipe for disaster! boating safety was not a deterrent.

Firstly, we hired boats before we bought them, which alleviated any boating accessories being bought, I still don’t know why any were bought, this person spent more time getting stuck on sand bars and cleaning the mess up afterwards than ever he did getting stuck into any serious sea faring adventures!

Boating While Under The Influence

February 15th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Recreation and Sports

Boating under the influence of alcohol is responsible for over 50% of boating fatalities every year. This percentage is rising as safety laws concerning personal floatation devices pushes down the death rate every year.

The number of recreational boating deaths in 1976 was 1,466. This was with an estimated 11.4 million boats for a rate of 12.4 deaths per 100,000 boats in use. Ten years later, in 1986, the number had dropped almost in half as the number of boats in use increased by almost 5 million. In 2005, the rate was less than half of the rate in 1976. What caused this steady decline? It can mostly be attributed to laws mandating the use of approved personal floatation devices in boats.

Actual-facts Boating Tips

December 26th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Recreation and Sports

* All boat keys need to have a key chain with a floating device on it. You really do not want to accidentally drop your keys, in water so deep, that you cannot see the bottom.

* Boat owner documents should be kept in a waterproof container/bag.

* When out in your boat and you see a storm coming, get off the lake as soon as possible.

* Learn a few knots so you can safely tie up your boat to the dock. You don’t want to return the next morning and find it has drifted away…or smashed into rocks. Also make sure it is secure.
